Bill Cosby visits Pink's Famous Hot Dogs

Bill Cosby manages to attract large crowds wherever he goes -- even when he's munching on chili dogs.

So it was for the recent recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, who made an appearance at Pink's Famous Hot Dogs on La Brea Avenue on Thursday night to help the landmark eatery celebrate its 70th anniversary and raise money for charity.

Gloria Pink, one of the co-owners of the stand along with husband Richard Pink and his sister, Beverly Pink Wolfe, said they wanted to give something back to their loyal customers. For seven days starting at 7 p.m. their famous chili cheese dogs were sold for 70 cents for 70 minutes, with the money going to the featured celebrity's charity of choice.

"I've known [Beverly's] father for years," Cosby said, while sitting in the closed off dining room, as fans recorded him through the adjacent glass. "This is for me to celebrate her father. She took over in a way the father would want his kids to. I'm here for the spirit of her father."

Dressed in his signature University of Massachusetts hoodie and a black Pink's baseball cap, the 72-year-old waved to the hundreds of eager people. Cosby, known for his humor, candor and sometimes his testiness, chastised a paparazzo for accidentally striking a woman with his video camera and spoke about his disappointment at the report of boys allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage girl outside a suburban San Francisco high school during a homecoming dance.

He has long made headlines for his social criticisms of the black community and recently released a hip-hop album that explores drug abuse, high school dropouts and teenage pregnancy. "One day," he declares, "we will win."

Later, when he was handed a plateful of dogs with "Pink's Loves Bill Cosby" written in mustard for a photo, he let the staff know that he prefers his dogs with just "a hint" of the yellow stuff.

Cosby decided after seeing the documentary film, "The Boys of Baraka," in which a group of at-risk Baltimore kids are sent to a boarding school in Kenya, that his funds would go to that program.

"It had so many levels of reality," Cosby said about the film. "I kept thinking to myself, 'Why can't this be known?' "

Steven Chris, a 19-year-old singer and actor, said he loves Pink's but is a bigger fan of Cosby.

"He's inspirational to me," Chris said. "He's just not some famous person. He makes a difference."

Pink's husband hates Christmas

The 30-year-old singer Pink has likened her spouse Carey Hart to Scrooge, the miserly character in novel A Christmas Carol who hates the festive period and anything else which makes others happy. However, Pink refuses to be brought down by Carey's attitude, revealing she can't wait for the winter holiday to begin.

She wrote on Twitter: "I am so in love with my funhouse family and my hubby. I am so excited for christmas even tho my hubby is SCROOGE (sic)." Despite his hatred of Christmas, Pink managed to convince her husband to watch Jim Carrey's new movie version of the classic tale with her over the weekend.

She wrote: "As much trash as Carey talks, he's pretty excited that we're seeing a christmas carol!!!! He can hardly sit still (sic)!"

Pink is currently in Oslo, Norway, on her Funhouse world tour. She is due to play a show later today but arrived in the city early to take in some of its culture.

She explained: "The artwork at the bar here in oslo is.... Interesting. So is the drunk guy next to us holding his balls. Pool balls (sic)."

“The security guy just carded me for my laminate to get into my dressing room,” the Daily Star quoted her as writing on her Twitter.com page.

Pink’s Most hit Album

Pink next issued Try This in November 2003. The album was a bit more rock-oriented, due in part to the songwriting collaboration of Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong on eight of the album's tracks. Try This' lead single, "Trouble," cracked into the upper regions of Billboard's Top 40, and earned Pink a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. On the home front, Pink wed motocross racer Carey Hart -- whom she had initially met at 2001's X-Games -- on January 7, 2006, in Costa Rica. Her next album, I'm Not Dead, appeared that April; its first single, "Stupid Girls," quickly became a hit, and the album reached the Top Ten. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Pink’s Second Solo Album

Toward the end of the year, Pink released her next single, "Get the Party Started"; it became her biggest, most inescapable hit to date, climbing into the Top Five. Her accompanying sophomore album, M!ssundaztood, quickly went double platinum; it boasted a more personal voice and a more eclectic sound, plus heavy contributions from ex-4 Non Blondes singer Linda Perry, who helped bring some more rock muscle to Pink's sound (as did guest appearances by Steven Tyler and Richie Sambora). M!ssundaztood attracted positive critical notices as well, and its second single, "Don't Let Me Get Me," became another fast-rising Top Ten hit.
